Commercial Battery Storage Guide for Installers
How Commercial Battery Energy Storage Systems Work
Commercial battery energy storage systems (BESS) store and dispatch energy according to site demand, PV generation, tariff structure and operating strategy.
In commercial PV projects, storage can increase solar self-consumption, reduce grid import and support peak shaving, load shifting, backup operation, EV charging and site energy management.
Commercial Battery Storage Applications
Typical applications include:
- Solar self-consumption: store surplus PV generation for later use.
- Peak shaving: reduce peak grid import during high-load periods.
- Load shifting: move energy use away from higher-cost periods.
- Backup power: support critical loads where backup capability is included.
- EV charging integration: combine PV, storage and charging infrastructure.
- Energy management: coordinate generation, storage and site loads through an EMS.
Choosing a Commercial Battery Storage System
Key considerations include:
- Load profile and PV generation
- Battery capacity and charge/discharge power
- AC-coupled, DC-coupled or integrated system architecture
- PCS and inverter compatibility
- Indoor or outdoor installation requirements
- EMS, monitoring and backup integration
- Scalability, warranty and commissioning support
UK Grid Connection and Commercial BESS
Commercial battery storage connected to the distribution network must meet the relevant UK connection requirements.
Depending on the system configuration, the applicable route may involve G98 or G99. Installers should confirm requirements with the relevant Distribution Network Operator (DNO) early in the project.
Commercial Battery Storage, EMS and Flexibility Services
An EMS can optimise battery operation against PV generation, site load, tariff periods, EV charging and other controllable assets.
Eligible systems may also support participation in flexibility or balancing services through a supplier or aggregator, subject to metering, controls and market-entry requirements.
Commercial Battery Storage FAQs
In many cases, yes. The best approach depends on the existing inverter setup, available space, site load profile and grid connection. Some projects may be suitable for an AC-coupled battery system, while others may need a different design. Alternergy can help installers review the project requirements and identify suitable commercial battery storage options.
C&I battery storage should be sized using real site energy data rather than estimates. Half-hourly consumption data is especially useful, as it shows when the site uses the most electricity and how demand compares with solar generation. A system designed for peak shaving may be sized differently from one intended for EV charging, backup power or solar self-consumption.
Often, yes. Grid-connected commercial battery storage systems may require approval from the local Distribution Network Operator, especially when installed alongside solar PV. The requirements depend on system size, export settings, connection type and site conditions. Installers should check DNO requirements early in the project to help avoid delays.
Some commercial battery storage systems can support backup power when configured for that purpose. Backup capability is not always included as standard, so it should be planned during the design stage. Installers should confirm which loads are critical, how long they need support for, and whether the site needs full-site backup or selected circuit backup.
