Sopoco Completes 1.145 MWh Battery Storage System at AJW Group HQ

Sopoco delivered a 1.145 MWh commercial battery storage system at AJW Group’s global headquarters in Slinfold, West Sussex.

The installation combines five Sungrow PowerStack battery cabinets with Atmosphere EMS and integrates with the site’s existing rooftop solar PV and inverter infrastructure. Alternergy supported the project with system design, capacity modelling, product supply, logistics coordination and technical guidance.

Project Overview

AJW Group’s global headquarters in Slinfold, West Sussex, already had an approximately 800 kW rooftop solar PV system in operation.

Although the solar installation was generating effectively, part of the electricity produced on-site was being exported to the grid for a limited financial return. Outside solar-generation hours, the facility was also drawing significant electricity from the grid.

AJW Group therefore, required a storage solution that could retain more of its solar generation on site, improve self-consumption and help reduce its overall electricity costs.

Energy Data Analysis and System Sizing

To establish the appropriate battery capacity, Sopoco worked with Alternergy and Orkestra to analyse AJW Group’s half-hourly electricity-consumption data and existing solar-generation data.

The information supplied by the client was modelled through the Orkestra design platform to assess expected system performance, examine potential return on investment and produce an evidence-based recommendation for the required storage capacity.

Battery Storage System Design

To improve on-site energy resilience and maximise the use of AJW Group’s existing solar generation, Sopoco installed a 1.145 MWh commercial battery storage system.

Installation and Commissioning

This was Sopoco’s largest cabinet-style battery storage installation at the time of the project and its first project at this level of scale.

Despite the size and complexity of the system, the installation was completed successfully and without significant issues.

The project involved coordination between Sopoco, Alternergy, Sungrow, Atmosphere and Orkes
tra, with each partner providing specialist support across system design, product supply, installation, energy management and commissioning.

" Thanks to Russ and the Sopoco team, the whole install went perfectly. "

01

Sungrow PowerStack Battery Storage

Five PowerStack cabinets provide a combined nominal capacity of 1.145 MWh and rated AC output of 550 kW.

02

Atmosphere Energy Management System

Atmosphere EMS provides the site-wide energy-management layer for the battery, solar PV and electrical infrastructure.

03

Integration with Existing Solar PV

The battery system allows more of the electricity generated during daylight hours to be retained and used on site.
